Qatar overview -MotoGP/Moto2

Sun 11 Apr 2010

It’s the start of the track bike season, and some fantastic racing in Qatar.

The new Moto2 formula looks like it could shape up to be something exciting. Lots of close racing, late corner overtaking, and the inevitable crashes and falls. Two of the expected front runners Stefan Bradek and Alex de Angelis spectacularly crashed out on just the third corner of the race, R De Rosa a little later and Takahashi was running in third when he fell.

Toni Elias put up a brave fight throughout the race, but just couldn’t hang on for a podium finish, as his tires looked to be suffering. So it was left to surprise newcomer, Japanese rider Tomizawa who took the lead from about halfway, to take an easy win, with Debon and Cluzel taking the next two steps on the podium.

Hopefully the first MotoGP race was also a sign of things to come.  Casey Stoner took a good early lead but crashed out on lap five. Valentino Rossi took over and fought with Andrea Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden for most of the race, but near the end managed to take a small lead. Lorenzo who had been hiding in fourth, on the last few laps took a rush for one of the top positions, and came in an exciting second. Dovizioso, who at one point even managed to take the lead from Rossi, in the end had to battle his way to the line, crossing just eleven thousands of a second in-front of an unlucky Nicky Hayden.

So it was a Yamaha 1 and 2 with Rossi, Lornezo and then Dovizioso for Honda on the podium. The best Rookie was Ben Spies who came in an excellent fifth, with possible title challengers De Puniet and Pedrosa taking sixth and seventh. Rossi’s close friend, Marco Simoncelli in his first MotoGP race, took a respectable 11th.

An excellent start to the season !
