Silverstone -MotoGP

Jorge Lorenzo was on fine form at Silverstone for the British MotoGP, as it was his turn to dominate all the way from pole position to crossing the line.

Other than last years winner Honda’s Andrea Dovizioso, who he swapped positions with on the first lap, no one else ever looked like challenging him.

Marco Melandri crashed out on the opening lap, but his Honda Gresini team-mate Marco Simoncelli had better fortunes as he climbed through the pack. The main battles of the race were between Dovizioso and Randy De Puniet fighting for second place, with American Nicky Hayden on their tails. Back in eighth Casey Stoner was lapping at similar pace to the Jorge, but it wasn’t until lap 13 he managed to get past Dani Pedrosa.

Yamaha Tech 3 rider Ben Spies put in a great performance and joined the battle for the remaining podium places, and with just three laps left Hayden and Spies both managed to pass De Puniet, and it wasn’t long before Stoner also did. On the final lap Spies squeezed past Hayden, and gained the final step of the podium for himself.

No magical mystery tour here, as he knew exactly where he was going – the top step of the podium !

Dovizioso’s second place was his best result of the season, breaking his duck on four third places. Ducati riders Hayden and Stoner took fourth and fifth, with Frenchman de Puniet taking sixth. Simoncelli who is in his first MotoGP season had his best result so far, to take seventh. In eight was Pedrosa, who had a horrible weekend after falls in both Saturday qualifying and Sunday practice, sustaining bruising to his knees. The final two positions, in the top ten, went to Colin Edwards and Aleix Espargaró.

The Spaniard Lorenzo, who celebrated his win dressed as a Beatle from ‘Sergeant Peppers Lonely Heart Band’, is now surely the favourite to take the tile. He has 115 points over Dovizioso’s 78 and Pedrosa’s 73, and his team-mate Valentino Rossi, who broke his leg in practice for the Italian Grand Prix a couple of weeks back, looks to be out for the foreseeable future.
