Indianapolis -MotoGP

The eleventh round of eighteen was at the famous US Brickyard.

Ben Spies was in pole position ahead of Jorge Lorenzo and Nicky Hayden.  Valentino Rossi, who recently announced he would be racing for Ducati next year, was back on the third row in seventh place, next to his fellow Italian Marco Simoncelli.

Spies got away cleanly at the start, and the Repsol Honda of Andrea Dovizioso who started in 4th moved through into 2nd with his team mate Dani Pedrosa moving from 5th to 4th.   Lorenzo was eaten up and slipped back into 5th, whilst Casey Stoner, who was three places further back from his grid position in 9th, had  lots of work to do.

Spies held the lead, but on lap 6 Pedrosa displayed the Honda’s sheer power and went flying past on the start/finish straight.  On the same lap the 2007 champion Stoner, who at the time was in 6th on the tail off Rossi, lost his front end and slid off -his race was over.

With 17 laps gone Lorenzo managed to get past Pedrosa to take third.  Two laps later Dovi ran wide and Rossi was in the ideal position to take a tight inside line.  He then went after third position Jorge, but it was not to be.

So, at the finish line it was Pedrosa with his third win of the season, with Spies taking second and Lorenzo third.  Rossi took fourth, nearly 10 seconds ahead of Dovizioso who was followed by Hayden, with Simoncelli and Alvaro Bautista taking it to the line with the Italian just beating the Suzuki rider.  The next two positions went to the Spanish riders Aleix Espargaro, and Hector Barbera who took 9th and 10th respectively, with Loris Capirossi, Hiroshi Aoyama, Randy De Puniet being the last riders to cross the line.

Unclassified was Mika Kallio finishing with 10 laps to go, Colin Edwards 2 laps before.  Casey Stoner went off back on lap 6, and Marco Melandri just 3 laps in.

In the riders championship it’s Lorenzo with 251 points, Pedrosa with 183, Dovizioso moves up a place with 126 points and Stoner with 119.  Rossi is hanging in with 114 and Spies with just a one point lead over Hayden, who has 109.
